Artisan Yixing Teapots
yixing teapot zisha clay teapots chinese asian

YiXing teapots are made from zisha clay found in the Jiangsu province of China.  Their artistic beauty & unparalleled contribution to the art of tea enjoyment is world famous.  In order to produce a strong teapot, the clay is first beaten to remove air pockets, then hand crafted & fired at over 2000 degrees. The porous clay interior is left unglazed so, over time, tea brewed in these pots will have an enhanced flavor.  It is highly recommended to use a separate pot for each kind of tea (green, oolong, flavored and black) to keep flavors pure.  The pots are traditionally small for gong fu brewing (multiple infusions of fine, loose leaf teas).

Variations and slight imperfections are part of the charm of these hand-finished Asian teapots.

Each pot comes in its own gift box and includes care instructions.

"Dragon Tower" - 18 ounces (~3+ cups)

Hands down, this is one of the most amazing, fabulous YiXing designs...EVER!

Ms. Yin Qifen chose a fairly traditional subject of dragons, but created a completely unique and very fun teapot.  The dark zisha clay is organically dynamic and the perfect foundation for a magnificent dragon as he curls around the teapot forming both the handle and the spout with a tiny little dragon perching on the lid.

The details are extra fine and lend to the dignity of the overall design.  The artist's chop marks appear on the base and inside the lid.  The teapot will actually hold a bit more than the declared 18 ounce capacity, but water may spill from the extra generous spout so I recommend filling to about 3/4" from the top.

"Calendar" - 7.5 ounces (~1+ cups)
The entire top is hand engraved with four concentric rings of characters representing the Chinese lunisolar calendar.  Each symbol is incredibly precise and finely detailed.  Six rounded 'ribs' encircle the body and a yin/yang symbol serves as the lid's knob.

Assistant Craft Master Zhou Hui Cu, founder of Hui Cu Pottery Arts of China, designed these stunning Zhu Ni clay teapots honoring the Chinese calendar and the Eight Diagrams.  Every aspect is meticulously crafted with six curved rings encircling the upper body of the teapot. "Calendar" and "Eight Diagrams" come with authenticity certificates.

"Eight Diagrams"    - 7.5 ounces (~1+ cups)
The eight diagrams represent the origin of all things according to ancient Chinese philosophers.  Heaven and earth, male and female, bring forth wood, water, fire and metal which bring forth sky, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and lake.  It represents the Chinese's ealiest knowledge of the universe.  The whole lines represent male and the broken lines represent female.  Together they form the Eight Diagrams.

"Gold Heart Lection"
- 16 ounces (~2-3 cups)

This design from Ms. Qian Hua Fang is a post modern masterpiece.  Notice the unique spout which runs along the body of the teapot.  To aid in perfect pouring, the artist included numerous extra strainer holes between the pot and spout.  The unique handle allows for a secure hold (thumb on top, index finger in the middle and curl remaining fingers below).  Carved Chinese characters (lection) are highlighted in gold to complete this statuesque charcoal zisha clay design.

Ms. Qian Hua Fang is from a very accomplished YiXing family famous for creating generations of fine YiXing ware.  She studied with many eminent artists, achieved status as an Assistant Craftsman and now produces unique, sophisticated works of art for tea enthusiasts.

"1000 Year Dragon" - 9 ounces (~1+ cups)

The smooth round body of this teapot is fabulously, and unexpectedly, juxtaposed with a clawed dragon splayed across the front.  Tea is poured out his mouth as he hangs on, claws firmly dug in to keep him in place.  Ms. Feng did a beautiful job of showcasing the awesome dragon while also taking great care to make the rest of the teapot warm and inviting.  This chocolate brown teapot comes with an authenticity certificate.

"Nine Dragons"
- 9.5 ounces (~1-2 cups)

Anyone familiar with YiXing Craft Master Da Zhou's work understands the intense effort and attention to detail that goes into each of his teapots.  Dragons often play a key role and there are nine total displayed on the body of this pot.

The main dragon bursts forth on one side surrounded by three dragons with teeth bared waiting to attack.  On the opposing side five dragons battle with balls of fire, bodies intertwined in the roiling sea.  The high quality golden yellow zisha clay gives an elegant, antique appearance with a rich feel and satiny soft smoothness.  It reminds me of creamy butterscotch.  Da Zhou's chop marks (artist's stamp) appear on the handle, inside the lid and on the base.

"Five Buddhas" - 12 ounces (~2 cups)

The Five Buddhas represent processes of enlightenment and are associated with the earthly aspects of fire, sky, earth, water and air as well as the personalities of humans; specifically consciousness, sensation, perception, form and volition. The Five Buddhas help guide and transform our conscious and subconscious, hopefully awakening the very qualities that each embodies.
The chocolate brown peach shaped teapot (see "Chinese Peaches" above regarding peach symbolism...) has five, very happy Buddha heads decorating it's surface. One on each side of the body, one on the back beneath the handle and two back-to-back perched on the lid. (Click on pictures for more, larger views...)

Mr. Bai Hong Xing, a native of YiXing, China, is an Assistant Craft Master. His high quality designs have gained quite a following; not only because of their great beauty and superior craftsmanship, but because he adds his own personal unique touch of novelty and humor to each creation. This teapot comes with an authenticity certificate (in Chinese) and a photo of Bai Hong Xing holding his creation.
